Sierra-Leone Agriculture Project

SIERRA LEONE:  The Mogbele Agricultural Project

The Mogbele Agricultural project started operation in 1989. It is a community based project which comprised of 16 villages and has grown to thirty villages in different chiefdoms with over 2000 acres of land

The purpose of the project is to primarily increase  rice production and subsequently other crops in  Sierra Leone, to the extent that it becomes an importer of rice, thus making it agriculturally self-sustaining,  The project’s operating concept was based upon  interest in improving the socio-economic conditions of Sierra Leone.

Goals:

  • Provide better income to all project members;
  • Improve year-round food self-sufficiency for the population;
  • Reduce the country’s import bill on food (rice, corn, etc.)
  • Reduce post-harvest losses;
    • Technical and economic sustainability of project;
    • Increased crop production and yields;
    • Improved food transformation through processing;
    • Improved access to local and regional markets;
    • Improved income and nutrition for project member and families;
    • Reduce migration of rural community members to urban areas (especially youths);
    • Improved management and technical skills.

  •

  • Provide good quality employment opportunities away from urban centers, reducing youth migration to the urban areas
  • Project Outcome

Grant information for agriculture

I am looking for grant information and opportunities for increasing my cow herd. I have taken over the family ranch, and am trying to increase my herd, and need assistance to purchase 100 head of cows.

Any information about agricultural grants or long-term, low-interest loans would be very helpful in my cattle buying process.
